Definitions

Circle of Confusion

It represents an area on the film/sensor to which a point needs to be blurred to be perceived as unsharp when viewed on a 8x10 print from 1 foot. Typically for APS sized sensor or film, CoC is 0.02mm and for 35mm sensor or film, CoC is 0.03mm.

Depth of Field

The total acceptable region of sharpness in front and behind the subject or the plane of focus.

DOF in Front

The acceptable region of sharpness in front of the subject or the plane of focus.

DOF Behind

The acceptable region of sharpness behind the subject or the plane of focus.

Hyperfocal Distance

When the lens is focused at this distance, it will give the greatest Depth of Field. The Depth of Field extends from 1/2 this distance in front to infinity behind.

Near Limit

The distance from lens beyond which the image is of acceptable sharpness up to the distance of far limit from the lens.

Far Limit

The distance from lens before which the image is of acceptable sharpness up to the distance of near limit from the lens.
